FEBRUARY 2016: Gravitational waves detected!

updated on

First direct detection of gravitational waves!! The two detectors Advanced LIGO have done a first scientific data taking from September 2015 to January 2016 and the data analysis done by the LIGO-Virgo collaboration has provided the first observation of a gravitational wave event.

The annoucement has been done on Febuary 11th 2016.
This gravitational wave was coming from the coalescence of two black holes of 29 and 36 times the solar mass, located about 1.3 billion years from the Earth. More information is available on the Virgo web
