Visits at LAPP: back on an intense season

The month of March closed the season of visit at LAPP. From the troisièmes to the Economics Commission of Grand Annecy, the visitors of the laboratory are very varied!

First of all, students in troisième* spent three days at LAPP for their job shadowing internship. On the program that day: presentations of research carried out in the laboratory and technical services (mechanics, electronics, IT), a visit of CERN and finally, the realisation of an electronic circuit. These internships took place in October and January for two groups of eight students.

In November, physics students from the University of Naples discovered the laboratory, its employees and its experiments. An opportunity for them to clarify their professional project, and perhaps to consider an internship at the laboratory in the coming years!

Masterclass at LAPP

In March, it was the turn of high school students: about 150 students from première and terminale were able to visit the laboratory. During these visits, students learned about particle and astroparticle physics, as well as the different jobs in the research field. They talked with young researchers and doctoral students who presented them the experiences they are working on. Of these classes, three completed their visit with the CERN Masterclasses. Students learned about particle physics research manipulating real LHC data. Then, they participated in a videoconference where they presented their results and exchanged with other students from around the world who participated in the same program, and also with CERN researchers.

Professional terminal students discovering the mechanical workshop

Our visitors are from several location, high school students received at LAPP this season were mostly from local high schools but we also received a class from Réunion island! Accustomed to receiving students specialised in science, we have this year organized a specific visit, intended for terminale students from technical high school, specialised in techniques of industrial boilermaking. The group of eight students deepened their knowledge on the LHC and also met mechanics technicians and visited the workshop. It was an opportunity to remind them of the importance of the role of technical trades in major scientific advances.

Apart from visiting high school students, the LAPP has also opened its doors to the Economics Commission of Grand Annecy. The elected representatives had the opportunity to discover the laboratory infrastructure, in particular MUST, the computing center.

Finally, to close the season, we welcomed the students of the Master’s degree in Scientific and Technical Communication and Culture of the Grenoble Alpes University to present them the exhibition space project.
