MUST : Mid-range data storage and computing centre widely open to EGI/LCG Grid infrastructure

Following the September 25th, 2007 official inauguration, the growth of the initial infrastructure has been progressive enough to be able to build an important computing facility for users. The main focus is turned to provide services to local Research laboratories but also to national and international ones through the integration of the facility in the EGI (European Grid Initiative) grid infrastructure and through the support of numerous other Virtual Organizations in High Energy Physic, Earth and Science, Astrophysical, Monte-Carlo simulation scientific domains.

With the launch, in November 2009 of the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) at CERN, the largest scientific instrument on the planet, it’s roughly 15 Petabytes (15 million Gigabytes) of data that are produced annually at full operation intensity. It’s thousands of scientists around the world that require to access and analysis them. In order to provide to the international scientific community, resources for data collection and computing of a so large amount of data, CERN has initiated and even managed since numerous years some Grid projects, in particular EGI (European Grid Infrastructure) project, and it’s today for the LAPP and all the HEP community a major tool for the following years.

Since 2002, with the objective to provide performing tools to LAPP physicians and a privileged access to the LHC data, laboratory has decided to participate to Grid projects as DATAGRID, EGEE, EGI (European Grid Infrastructure) and obviously LCG (LHC Computing Grid), the specific entity in charge of the LHC data computing.

From spring 2005, LAPP direction and the technical team for building a Tier 3 LCG node (implied in the analysis tasks for local physicians) and the University Presidence for providing high performance computing resources to all research labs, have decided to create the MUST "Mésocentre de l’Univ. Savoie Mont Blanc ouvert sur la grille EGI/LCG" infrastructure.

Since November 2007, the facility is also a Tier 2 node for the ATLAS and LHCb experiments, it means officially part of their computing model and running production tasks at the international level (simulation, reconstruction, analysis) for those two experiments.

MUST is hosted in the Mecatronics building and managed by its technical team.
